Especially if LDAP lookups are combined with other authentication providers (e.g. HTTP-Basic & Kerberos) case sensitivity in username handling can be an issue. In one of my installations the attached patch helped to solve this.

Please note that you would also need the first two lines from #1294 to make this work as expected.
