i know that there's the nagios-images package on debian, but imho it's a pain that there are not that many logos available. at least e.g. the debian logo may get included - http://www.debian.org/logos/ - but as always, this is a matter of respecting licenses and copyright, so once added a list of their origins must be kept.

those could be added to icinga web then as well, if needed.

Feature #4057 -- Include more logos

   This commit adds the entire consist of logo images from the
F*Nagios project done by Piotr Ciesielski.  He granted the right
to redistribute the set on 15-Sep-2013 with the following text:

"So to sum up: You can use it in any way You want."

   The F*Nagios set is contained in the subdirectories "equipment",
"other", and "vendors".

   An additional set is provided in the "misc" subdirectory which
contains an older set from Nagios proper and some custom icons that
I created personally from items scoured from the WWW.  I release
my work under the same license as Icinga.

classic ui: Include more logos #4057

   This commit adds the file "Copyright.txt" in the "images"
directory and details the current statte of copyright and licensing
of the various images therein and in the "logos" hierarchy to the
best knowledge of the file's author.

   Credit is given to the individual who created the F*Nagios icon
set and who granted permission for the Icinga Project to redistribute
them freely.

A quick look at Google yielded a boatload at http://exchange.nagios.org/directory/Graphics-and-Logos/Images-and-Logos and more than a few other spots as well. I also have a raft of custom ones that I've scraped from interfaces and web-pages for random devices that didn't seem to have anything available online (e.g. Polycom devices and other random fun bits like using the old Eveready "9-Lives" electric cat logo for UPSes and other cultural icons that tend to be inside jokes).

Ensuring GPL openness could constitute a career-path and would be incredibly time consuming. In the past, when I've used corporate logos in public settings I've declared "All commercial logos are copyright by their owners who retain all rights to them" as part of a boilerplate "legal" statement. I've never had any problems, but then again all the ones I've so used have been from companies long dead.

The above having been said, the "logos" directory in the git repository is rather pathetic and could use a decent sampling of artwork, if that's the right place to put it. Given that .GIF is encumbered, I'd recommend going with .png and .gd2 only but this is certainly open to discussion.

By far and away the best-looking set of "logo" icons I've seen came from the F*Nagios project (http://www.intec.gda.pl/html/projects/fnagios.html). There's no mention of a license anywhere that I can find, so I'll contact them and ask whether the Icinga Project could bundle them, with attribution.

I have heard back from the original author of the icon-set, and he states that he is willing to consider them public-domain and, "So to sum up: You can use it in any way you want."

I also have a few of my own that were appropriated from the WWW and modified (sometimes heavily) into icons which I hope to have on a piece of hardware that is currently powered down. Mine are mostly whimsical (e.g. the use of the "Everready" "9-Lives" "electric cat" logo to denote a UPS (which met with much popular acceptance here in the US)) and I would be happy to either put them in the public-domain or put them under GPL.

Feedback requested, both for methodology (i.e. "Do I put all these directly into the html/share/images/logos tree, or something else?) and for any licensing concerns, although I believe that if we're going to use the F*Nagios set we should give credit in the THANKS file.
